EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic moment before the launch of the Soviet Soyuz T12 spacecraft on 17 July 1984. Pictured from left to right are Vladimir Dzhanibekov, Svetlana Savitskaya, and Igor Volk, a trio of courageous cosmonauts about to embark on an extraordinary journey into space. Svetlana Savitskaya holds a special place in history as she became the second woman ever to venture into space. Not only that, but she also achieved another groundbreaking feat by becoming the first woman to perform a spacewalk. Her remarkable achievements didn't stop there; Savitskaya remains the only woman who has had the privilege of undertaking two separate space flights. The Soyuz T12 mission was not just another routine flight; it involved docking with the Salyut 7 space station. During this mission, Savitskaya spent an awe-inspiring 3.5 hours walking freely in outer space—an experience that very few humans have been fortunate enough to encounter. This photograph is a testament to human ingenuity and determination as these brave individuals prepared themselves mentally and physically for their incredible voyage beyond Earth's atmosphere. It serves as a reminder of our relentless pursuit of knowledge and exploration in our quest to unravel the mysteries of outer space—a quest that continues even today.
