1868 Waterhouse Hawkins & hadrosaur gilt 1868 Waterhouse Hawkins & hadrosaur gilt

Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkin and his Hadrosaurus foulkii, the worlds first mounted dinosaur skeleton. Gilded cover of Sketches of Creation by Winchell 1870 engraved from photographs around 1868. The discovery of the first american dinosaur H. foulkii (1858) revolutionised earlier concepts of their form and lifestyle. Waterhouse Hawkins was keen to update his designs from the Crystal Palace dinosaurs to reflect this in New Yorks proposed Paleozoic park. The reconstruction was built by Hawkins under the advice of Joseph Leidy and E.D. Cope, then put on display at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. It caused a sensation with nearly 100, 000 visitors, and started dinomania in the USA. Such mounted dinosaur skeletons would henceforth be the mainstay of natural history museums worldwide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable collaboration between Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins and his iconic creation, the Hadrosaurus foulkii. Dating back to 1868, this gilt engraving from photographs captures the world's first mounted dinosaur skeleton in all its glory. The groundbreaking discovery of H. foulkii in 1858 shattered preconceived notions about dinosaurs' form and lifestyle, prompting Hawkins to update his designs for New York's proposed Paleozoic park. Under the guidance of esteemed experts Joseph Leidy and E. D. Cope, Hawkins meticulously reconstructed this awe-inspiring creature at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. When unveiled to the public, it caused a sensation that drew nearly 100,000 visitors and ignited a nationwide fascination with dinosaurs known as "dinomania". This pivotal moment marked a turning point for natural history museums worldwide as mounted dinosaur skeletons became their prized exhibits. The gilded cover of Sketches of Creation by Winchell (1870) immortalizes this extraordinary achievement through intricate illustration and artistry. It serves as a testament to both scientific exploration and artistic expression intertwined within paleontology. Today, this historic masterpiece resides at the American Museum of Natural History alongside other renowned fossils curated by luminaries such as Edward Drinker Cope and Joseph Leidy. Paul D. Stewart's expertly captured photograph print preserves not only an important milestone in scientific discovery but also pays homage to Waterhouse Hawkins' visionary contributions that continue to inspire generations fascinated by Earth's ancient past.
