Emulsion photo of cosmic ray event

The power of a cosmic ray is shown in this false- colour emulsion photo of a cosmic ray sulphur nucleus (red) colliding with a nucleus in the emulsion. The collision produces a spray of other particles: a fluorine nucleus (green), other nuclear fragments (blue) & 16 pions (yellow). The length of the sulphur track is 0. 11 mm. The curlicues which adorn the track of the sulphur nucleus are electrons which it has knocked out of atoms in passing. The photograph was taken in 1950 by Cecil Powell, the English physicist who pion- eered the use of photographic emulsions to record the tracks of electrically charged particles

EDITORS COMMENTS
This emulsion photo, taken in 1950 by the brilliant physicist Cecil Powell, unveils the astonishing power of a cosmic ray event. The image showcases a false-colour representation of a cosmic ray sulphur nucleus (depicted in striking red) colliding with another nucleus within the emulsion. As this collision occurs, an extraordinary spray of particles emerges: a vibrant green fluorine nucleus, various blue nuclear fragments, and an impressive cluster of sixteen yellow pions. The length of the sulphur track captured in this microscopic photograph measures merely 0.11 mm. However, what truly captivates the eye are the elegant curlicues adorning its path – these intricate patterns represent electrons that were dislodged from atoms as the sulphur nucleus swiftly passed through. Powell's pioneering use of photographic emulsions revolutionized our understanding of subatomic particles and their movements. This magnified image offers us an awe-inspiring glimpse into particle physics and provides valuable insights into cosmic rays' impact events and forces at play. As we delve deeper into this mesmerizing odyssey through subatomic realms, it becomes clear that each subject within this composition carries immense significance for scientific exploration. Through Science Photo Library's lens, we embark on an enthralling journey where motion meets action and energy intertwines with force – all encapsulated within this single snapshot frozen in time.
