Greetings Card : Fossilized spiders web
Cards from Science Photo Library
Fossilized spiders web
Fossilized spiders web. Thread of silk from a spiders web preserved in amber dating from the Early Cretaceous period, approximately 130 million years ago. The thread has glue droplets along its length and is almost identical to threads made by living spiders belonging to the superfamily Araneoidea. Adhesive (viscid) threads may slow the rate at which the thread dries, and help bring insects to a stop. This amber was found in amber beds near Jezzine in Lebanon. Amber is the fossilized resin of pine and other trees. Magnification: x230 when printed 10cm wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of natural history - a fossilized spider's web preserved in amber dating back to the Early Cretaceous period, approximately 130 million years ago. The delicate thread of silk, belonging to the superfamily Araneoidea, is almost indistinguishable from threads produced by living spiders today. Along its length, tiny glue droplets can be seen, serving as adhesive (viscid) traps that would have aided in capturing unsuspecting insects. Discovered in amber beds near Jezzine in Lebanon, this unique find offers us an extraordinary glimpse into ancient ecosystems and the behavior of prehistoric arachnids. Amber itself is formed from fossilized resin secreted by pine and other trees throughout millions of years. With a magnification level of x230 when printed at 10cm wide, every intricate detail becomes apparent. The presence of these gluey threads suggests that spiders have been perfecting their hunting techniques for hundreds of millions of years. By slowing down the drying process and ensnaring insects with their sticky strands, these ancient arachnids were able to secure their prey effectively. This stunning photograph not only captures the beauty and complexity found within nature but also serves as a testament to the enduring legacy left behind by long-extinct creatures. It reminds us that even after countless millennia have passed, traces of life's intricate tapestry can still be found embedded within Earth's geological treasures.
