Honey fungus (Armillaria mellea)

Honey fungus mushrooms (Armillaria mellea). This fungus is found on or around the trunks of coniferous and deciduous trees. It is a tree parasite and the damage it causes is fatal. The fungus spreads by long black bootlace-like strands called rhizomorphs (not seen) which can grow beneath bark, along roots and through the soil. Honey fungus mushrooms grow from summer to early winter and are edible once cooked. Photographed in August in Cairngorms National Park, Aberdeenshire, Scotland

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enchanting beauty of Honey fungus (Armillaria mellea) mushrooms thriving in the lush landscapes of Cairngorms National Park, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. These fascinating fungi are commonly found on or around the trunks of both coniferous and deciduous trees, but their presence is far from benign. As a tree parasite, this species inflicts fatal damage to its host. Unseen beneath the surface lies an intricate network of long black bootlace-like strands called rhizomorphs that allow this relentless fungus to spread its influence. It can grow stealthily beneath bark, along roots, and through the soil with remarkable efficiency. Despite their parasitic nature and destructive tendencies towards trees, these honey fungus mushrooms possess a surprising culinary potential once cooked. From summer to early winter, they grace our forests with their elegant appearance and offer a unique flavor experience for those brave enough to indulge in their edible qualities. As we marvel at this image's botanical wonders captured in August within the breathtaking Scottish landscape, let us appreciate not only the delicate balance between life forms but also the resilience and adaptability exhibited by organisms such as Armillaria mellea. This photograph serves as a reminder of nature's complexity and invites us to explore further into the realms of biology and mycology while admiring Europe's rich biodiversity.
