Mars, October 2005, HST image
Mars, Hubble Space Telescope image. North is at top. A large dust storm is seen at centre (brighter orange area). Mars was 43 million kilometres from Earth during this close approach on 28 October 2005. This is the Martian summer in the southern hemisphere, and the southern polar ice cap has largely sublimated. The blueish-white areas at top and at left are water-ice clouds. Mars, the fourth planet from the Sun, has a diameter of around 6800 kilometres. This image was obtained with Hubbles Advanced Camera for Surveys instrument

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Mars in all its glory during October 2005, as captured by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). With the northern region at the top, our neighboring planet reveals a mesmerizing sight - a large dust storm dominating the center with its vibrant orange hue. At this particular close approach, Mars was situated approximately 43 million kilometers away from Earth. The image captures Martian summer in full swing within the southern hemisphere, causing significant sublimation of the southern polar ice cap. As we explore further into this celestial landscape, one cannot miss the ethereal blueish-white water-ice clouds adorning the top and left portions of Mars. These delicate formations add an element of mystique to an already awe-inspiring scene. With a diameter measuring around 6800 kilometers, Mars proudly stands as our fourth planet from the Sun. The remarkable clarity and detail of this image were made possible through Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys instrument (ACS), enabling planetary scientists to delve deeper into understanding Mars' atmospheric phenomena. This photograph serves as a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge about our solar system and beyond.
