EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1861, offering a glimpse into the oil wells at Tarr Farm in Oil Creek Valley, Pennsylvania. The drawing showcases two remarkable oil wells that played a pivotal role in shaping the world's oil production during that era. On the left side of the image stands the Philips well, distinguished by its wooden collecting tank. This extraordinary well holds an esteemed position as one of history's most productive drilling sites. In October 1861 alone, it yielded an astounding 4,000 barrels of oil per day – a testament to its significance and impact on global energy resources. Adjacent to it is the Woodford well, which also contributed significantly to this thriving industry. Although not as prolific as its counterpart, this well still managed to produce an impressive 1,500 barrels per day in July 1862. The historical significance of these oil wells cannot be overstated. During their heyday, Oil Creek Valley was responsible for half of the world's oil production until 1901. These black gold mines attracted countless workers and transformed Pennsylvania into an industrial powerhouse. As we observe this detailed illustration from the late 19th century, we are reminded of both human ingenuity and nature's abundant resources coming together to fuel progress and shape our modern world.
