EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the esteemed Pierre Bretonneau, a renowned French physician and epidemiologist. Born in 1778, Bretonneau dedicated his life to the field of medicine, leaving an indelible mark on medical history. Studying medicine in Paris, he later joined Tours hospital in 1816 where he made groundbreaking contributions to the field. In 1825, Bretonneau performed the first tracheotomy for laryngeal diphtheria, showcasing his pioneering spirit and commitment to saving lives. His significant work continued as he wrote a treatise distinguishing between diphtheria (which he named) and scarlet fever in 1826. Moreover, Bretonneau described typhoid fever and proposed the germ theory of disease - a concept that would later be widely accepted thanks to Louis Pasteur's research. Taken around 1860 when Bretonneau was already in his sixties or seventies, this photograph portrays him as a distinguished figure with wisdom etched upon his face. With blood letting being a common practice during that era of medical history, it serves as a reminder of how far we have come in understanding healthcare practices. Bretonneau's legacy remains intact today as we honor his contributions to medicine. This print encapsulates not only his remarkable achievements but also pays tribute to an extraordinary man who forever changed our understanding of diseases and their treatment.
