Samuel Pierpont Langley, US aviator

Samuel Pierpont Langley, American astronomer and aviation pioneer (1834-1906). Langley was born in Massachusetts and went on to become Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution (1887). Between 1891 and 1896, Langley built many aircraft models, trying to solve to power-to-weight problem that prevented his aerodromes from flying. Finally, he produced a steam-driven model that flew for nearly a mile. This convinced him, in 1903, to attempt to fly a full-scale version of the Langley Aerodrome. It was not a success. A second attempt was also a failure and Langley died in 1906, a broken man

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Samuel Pierpont Langley, an American aviator and astronomer who left an indelible mark on the world of aviation. Born in Massachusetts, Langley's journey led him to become the esteemed Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution in 1887. Driven by his passion for flight, Langley dedicated years between 1891 and 1896 constructing numerous aircraft models. His ultimate goal was to overcome the power-to-weight challenge that hindered his aerodromes from taking flight. After relentless efforts, he finally succeeded in creating a steam-driven model that soared gracefully for nearly a mile. Buoyed by this achievement, Langley resolved to fly a full-scale version of his groundbreaking creation - the Langley Aerodrome - in 1903. Unfortunately, both attempts ended in failure, leaving Langley disheartened and shattered. Despite these setbacks, Samuel Pierpont Langley's contributions to aviation remain significant. This monochrome portrait showcases a determined man whose scientific mind sought answers beyond what seemed possible at the time. As an academic and scientist with expertise in astronomy and physics, he pushed boundaries and paved the way for future aviators. In this image captured by Science Photo Library, we witness not only a pioneer but also a human being whose unwavering dedication shaped our understanding of flight today. Let us remember Samuel Pierpont Langley as an influential figure whose legacy lives on despite his unsuccessful endeavors.
