The rocket is carrying a Dragon capsule filled with cargo. This is the third trip by the SpaceX Dragon capsule to the International Space Station (ISS). It originated from NASAs COTS (Commercial Orbital Transportation Services) initiative, set up to encourage private companies to ship cargo to the ISS after the retirement of the shuttle program in 2011
