Cards from Science Photo Library
Winged black ants
Winged black ants. Swarm of winged black ants (Lasius niger) emerging from cracks in the ground. During the hot summer months winged reproductive males and large winged female queens take to the air in a mass mating flight. The males die after mating and the queens return to the ground, bit off their own wings and burrow underground to lay their eggs. The eggs hatch into non-reproductive females, who take care of the new colony. Photographed in July

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases a mesmerizing spectacle of nature's wonders. In this image, winged black ants, known as Lasius niger, emerge from the cracks in the ground during the scorching summer months. It is during this time that reproductive males and large female queens take flight together for a mass mating ritual. As these male ants fulfill their purpose by mating with the females, they meet their ultimate fate and perish. The resilient queens then return to the earth's surface where they meticulously bite off their own wings before burrowing underground to lay their precious eggs. The cycle of life continues as these eggs hatch into non-reproductive females who dutifully care for and nurture the new colony. This intricate process highlights not only the complexity of ant societies but also showcases nature's remarkable ability to sustain life through various stages. Photographed in July, this image captures the essence of entomology and biology at its finest. The swarm of winged black ants creates a visually stunning sight against a backdrop of vibrant greenery. Through this photograph, we are reminded once again of how diverse and fascinating our planet's fauna can be.
