EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 1930s, capturing a picturesque view of the Kingsley Statue and Quayside in Bideford, Devon. The statue itself stands tall as a tribute to Charles Kingsley, an influential figure known for his social and work reform efforts during the 19th century. Erected in 1906, this iconic monument was later granted Grade II listed status in the 1970s. The image showcases not only the grandeur of the statue but also provides a glimpse into the vibrant promenade at Bideford. This bustling waterfront area served as a hub for locals and tourists alike, offering stunning views of boats gently bobbing on tranquil waters. Interestingly, it was Charles Kingsley's renowned novel "Westward Ho!" that played a significant role in transforming this region into a popular tourist destination. The book's popularity led to an influx of visitors flocking to North Devon, prompting the construction of the Bideford, Westward Ho! and Appledore Railway between 1901 and 1908. As we admire this snapshot frozen in time, we can't help but appreciate how history intertwines with artistry. It serves as a reminder of both cultural heritage and progress—a testament to how literature can shape landscapes while honoring those who have left an indelible mark on society.
