EDITORS COMMENTS
Addie Gatewood Williams (1898-1985) was an influential African American educator, journalist, and community leader from Richmond, Virginia, during the 1920s. In this striking black and white portrait, Williams is seen wearing a simple yet elegant blouse and a serious expression, exuding a sense of determination and intelligence. The photograph, taken in the 1920s, captures the essence of a woman who defied the racial and gender barriers of her time. Addie Gatewood Williams began her career as a teacher before transitioning into journalism. She worked for various publications, including the Richmond Planet and the Richmond Times-Dispatch. In 1924, she became the first black woman to be employed as a reporter for the Richmond News Leader. Williams also served as the editor of the Afro-American Journal in New York City from 1926 to 1928. This photograph is a testament to Williams' groundbreaking achievements during the 1920s, a time when opportunities for black women in journalism and education were limited. The image is part of the Jean Blackwell Hutson Research and Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture at the New York Public Library. It is a valuable addition to the rich history of African American heritage and serves as an inspiration for future generations.
