Ainu Woman, 1813

EDITORS COMMENTS
- This image is a print from an atlas published by the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1813, featuring the works of V.G. Tilesius, the expedition's doctor, naturalist, and official artist. The atlas, one of the largest publications of engravings from tsarist Russia, includes 109 plates based on Tilesius' drawings from the 1803-06 circumnavigation expedition led by Captain I.F. Kruzenshtern. This particular plate depicts an Ainu woman, an indigenous people from the northern Japanese islands and the southern Sakhalin Island. The woman is shown wearing traditional apparel, including a fur coat, a hat adorned with feathers, and her hair styled in intricate braids. She is seated cross-legged, her face expressing a calm and contemplative demeanor. The engraving, created by Jegor Skotnikoff, offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the Ainu people and the exploration era of the 19th century. This historic image is a valuable addition to any collection of anthropology, ethnography, or exploration-themed art.
