EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Emperor Alexander II, the Tsar of Russia from 1855 to 1881. Created by Coide in approximately 1880, it captures the essence of this influential ruler who was known as "The Liberator". Alexander II is famously remembered for emancipating Russia's serfs in 1861, a significant step towards social reform. In this portrait, we see Alexander II seated confidently, adorned in royal robes and a crown upon his head. His face exudes determination and wisdom, complemented by his distinguished moustache. The artist skillfully portrays the emperor's regal presence while hinting at his role as a reformer. Despite his efforts to bring about change, some criticized Alexander II for what they perceived as slow progress. Tragically, on March 13th, 1881, he fell victim to an assassination attempt in St Petersburg when a nihilist student threw a bomb at him. This event marked the end of an era and left an indelible mark on Russian history. Displayed against a backdrop of vibrant colors and intricate details characteristic of Coide's style, this print serves as both an artistic masterpiece and historical documentation. It offers viewers insight into the complex political landscape of nineteenth-century Russia and highlights the challenges faced by those seeking freedom and reform during that time.
