Tsar Alexander III and family

Tsar Alexander III (1845-1894) at the Livadia Palace, Yalta with his family. From left; the Tsarevich Nicholas (later Tsar Nicholas II), Grand Prince Georgi Alexandrovich, Tsaritsa Maria Feodorovna, Grand Princess Olga, Grand Prince Mikhail (seated) and Grand Princess Xenia (Ksenia). The Livadia Palace was the summer retreat of the Russian tsars, built by Tsar Alexander II for his consumptive wife. Tsar Alexander III died of kidney disease at Livadia in 1894

Tsar Nicholas II at the opening ceremony of the first Duma, St Petersburg, Russia, 1906. The Duma, the elected legislative assembly of the Russian Empire, was established as a result of the Russian Revolution of 1905. Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918), who opened the Duma, was determined to retain his autocratic power over the government of Russia however. Shortly before the Duma opened, he passed the Fundamental Laws, which stated that the Tsar's ministers could not be appointed by and were not responsible to the Duma. Increasing tension between the Duma's members and Nicholas's ministers led to the assembly being dissolved within ten weeks of its opening. Card 3 of 5 - The Wrestlers'. A cartoon interpretation of the Russo-Japanese war, acted out by the principal ruling individuals from the International Community. The Russo-Japanese War was a conflict that grew out of the rival imperialist ambitions of the Russian Empire and the Empire of Japan over Manchuria and Korea. The major theatres of operations were Southern Manchuria, specifically the area around the Liaodong Peninsula and Mukden, and the seas around Korea, Japan, and the Yellow Sea. Japan inflicted a series of stunning defeats on the Russian Navy, principally at Tsushima in May 1905. In this third card, Tsar Nicholas II and the Japanese Emperor wrestle with each other whilst the International community watches on, forming up behind the side they are supporting
