1700 Russian Tsar Peter the Great

Engraving with later tinting of Peter the Great (1672-1725). Tsar of Russia from 1682-1721. Peter taught himself technical and mechanical arts, especially in relation to military and naval science. In 1696, in an effort to acquaint Russia with western science and technology, he led several diplomatic missions to Europes major cities. He persuaded many skilled individuals to immigrate to Russia to help make it a major world power. In the city that he founded, St. Petersburg, he created an Academy of Science to encourage scientific research. He was also a keen collector - a box of teeth pulled from his staff is preserved today (see Purcell & Gould " Finders, Keepers" 1992)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed Russian Tsar Peter the Great, a visionary leader who left an indelible mark on his country's history. Born in 1672, Peter was not only a powerful ruler but also a self-taught expert in technical and mechanical arts, particularly military and naval science. In his quest to modernize Russia and bring it closer to Western advancements, Peter embarked on numerous diplomatic missions across Europe starting from 1696. His persuasive skills were remarkable as he managed to entice skilled individuals from various fields to immigrate to Russia, thereby transforming it into a formidable world power. Peter's influence extended beyond politics and warfare; he had an insatiable curiosity for knowledge and amassed an impressive collection of curiosities. One intriguing item that survives today is a box containing teeth pulled from his staff members – a testament to his eccentricity as well as his desire for preservation. Not content with merely collecting oddities, Peter established the Academy of Science in St. Petersburg – the city he founded – which served as a hub for scientific research and innovation. This institution played a pivotal role in fostering intellectual growth within Russia during his reign. The artist behind this exquisite engraving with later tinting is Paul D. Stewart. Through this artwork, we are transported back in time to witness the greatness of Tsar Peter I firsthand - an emperor whose passion for knowledge propelled him towards making enduring contributions both at home and abroad.
