Alfred Refuses to Burn His Fingers, 1862

Alfred Refuses to Burn His Fingers, 1862. The Greek Government had decided that elections should be held to find a King to replace King Otho, who had abdicated. One suggestion was that Prince Alfred, Victorias second son, should be invited to take the throne. This invitation was politely decline. This cartoon, therefore, depicts Greece inviting a suitably clad Prince Alfred to take possession of the cake labelled Greece. The cake being very hot, however, Alfred is most reluctant to burn his fingers. From Punch, or the London Charivari, December 6, 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this satirical cartoon print titled "Alfred Refuses to Burn His Fingers, 1862" we witness a significant moment in Greek politics during the 19th century. The Greek Government had decided to hold elections to find a new King after King Otho's abdication. One suggestion was inviting Prince Alfred, Queen Victoria's second son, to take the throne. However, much to Greece's surprise and disappointment, Prince Alfred politely declined the invitation. The cartoon humorously depicts Greece as a delicious cake labeled with its name. Dressed in suitable attire for royalty, Prince Alfred is shown hesitatingly reaching out towards the cake but pulling his hand back at the last moment. The reason behind his reluctance becomes clear - the cake is depicted as being very hot. This clever portrayal captures both political and personal elements of this historical event. It highlights Greece's desire for stability and strong leadership by extending an invitation to a potential king from Britain. On the other hand, it showcases Prince Alfred's cautiousness and refusal to engage in something that could potentially harm him or tarnish his reputation. Created by an unknown artist and published in Punch magazine on December 6th, 1862, this monochrome engraving offers us a glimpse into the intricate world of international politics during that time period while also providing entertainment through satire.
