Allegorical Figure, c. 1635. Creator: Bernardo Strozzi (Italian, 1581?-1644)
Allegorical Figure, c. 1635. Strozzi drew this female figure in preparation for one of his major oil paintings, also owned by the Cleveland museum and currently on view upstairs in the Baroque Art gallery (220). Because of the armor, the subject of this drawing might be Bellona (goddess of war), or Minerva (goddess of wisdom), both of whom are usually shown wearing their armor. The figure may also be Thetis, the mother of the Greek hero Achilles, thanking the god Vulcan for the gift of a suit of armor for her son, or Venus, with the armor of her lover, Mars

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite artwork of Bernardo Strozzi, an Italian artist from the 17th century. The image features an allegorical figure drawn by Strozzi around 1635, as a preparatory study for one of his renowned oil paintings. This very painting is currently displayed in the Baroque Art gallery on the upper floor of the Cleveland Museum. The subject of this drawing remains open to interpretation, with several possibilities suggested by art historians. The presence of armor suggests that it could be Bellona, the goddess of war, or Minerva, the goddess of wisdom - both commonly depicted wearing such attire. Another potential identification is Thetis, mother to Achilles in Greek mythology, expressing gratitude towards Vulcan for gifting her son a suit of armor. Alternatively, it might represent Venus adorned with Mars' armor symbolizing their passionate love affair. Executed using black chalk and red chalk techniques, this drawing exemplifies Strozzi's mastery in capturing intricate details and conveying emotion through his artistry. With its rich heritage and historical significance rooted in Italy's artistic legacy, this piece has found its rightful place within The Cleveland Museum's esteemed collection. Heritage Art proudly presents this stunning print which allows viewers to appreciate every stroke and nuance crafted by Bernardo Strozzi over four centuries ago.
