Ammunition Works at Northfleet - Ball-Cartridge-Making, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Ammunition Works at Northfleet - Ball-Cartridge-Making, 1854. Kent factory of Schlesinger & Wells during the Crimean War - extensive contract for the supply of ball cartridges to the Turkish government....behold, sitting at benches, from three hundred to four hundred young women, whose occupation it is to roll on brass tubes slips of cartridge paper, previously cut for that purpose by machines. The bullet...is dropped into the further end of the tubular paper, which is, at that end, pasted together so as to hold securely its metallic enclosure. Let the reader bear in mind that this is the only manner in which paste is used throughout the whole establishment...The girls, as fast as they form the paper tubes, place them tidily and neatly in wooden boxes which, when full, are forthwith carried into drying-rooms...the most careful and the most ingenious pains are taken to finish off the cartridges both cold and dry...'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Ammunition Works at Northfleet - Ball-Cartridge-Making, 1854: A Glimpse into the Kent Factory of Schlesinger & Wells During the Crimean War This photograph offers a rare glimpse into the inner workings of the Schlesinger & Wells ammunition factory at Northfleet during the Crimean War. The factory, which held an extensive contract for the supply of ball cartridges to the Turkish government, was a hive of industrious activity. In this image, we see hundreds of young women seated at benches, their focused expressions revealing the importance of their role in the production process. Their occupation was to roll brass tubes, slips of cartridge paper, previously cut by machines. The bullet, a crucial component of the cartridge, was dropped into the further end of the tubular paper, which was pasted together at that end to securely hold the metallic enclosure. It is essential to note that paste was used sparingly and only for this specific purpose throughout the entire establishment. The girls, as they formed the paper tubes, placed them carefully and neatly in wooden boxes. Once full, these boxes were promptly transported to drying-rooms. The meticulous attention to detail and the ingenious nature of the process are evident in the photograph. The girls worked diligently to ensure that each cartridge was finished off both cold and dry, a testament to the factory's commitment to quality. This photograph provides a fascinating insight into the world of ammunition production during a time of war, showcasing the vital role that women played in the manufacturing process.
