Anapa, on the coast of Circassia, 1854. Creator: Unknown

Anapa, on the coast of Circassia, 1854. Sketch by Lieutenant C. E. Gordon, Royal Engineers, of a strategic port during the Crimean War:.."bombarded since the 7th [September], by the squadron under Admiral [Edmund Moubray] Lyons"...Anapa...is a seaport town and fortress of Circassia, on the Black Sea, and has a Russian garrison. It is meanly built, and has a bad harbour...When the Russians, last spring, destroyed that chain of forts along the Circassian coast by which they had for a number of years held the country in a grasp of iron, they thought proper to spare Anapa, Soujuk Kaleh, and Novorussik. Of these three forts, Anapa is said to be the most formidable; and, as it is the nearest to Sebastopol, it is not unlikely that its destruction may have formed a portion of the plan laid down by the commanders of the present campaign'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Anapa, on the coast of Circassia, 1854: A Strategic Port during the Crimean War This evocative black and white sketch, created by Lieutenant C. E. Gordon of the Royal Engineers, captures the strategic port of Anapa in 1854, during the Crimean War. The town, located on the Black Sea in what is now Krasnodar Krai, Russia, was a key target due to its significance as a seaport and fortress of Circassia. Anapa's meanly built structures and poor harbor belied its formidable status, making it a valuable prize for both the Russians and the British. The scene depicted in the sketch shows the town under bombardment by the squadron under Admiral Edmund Moubray Lyons since the 7th of September, 1854. The Russians had destroyed many forts along the Circassian coast to gain control of the region, but they chose to spare Anapa, Soujuk Kaleh, and Novorussik. Of these three forts, Anapa was considered the most formidable and the closest to Sebastopol, leading many to believe that its destruction was a part of the campaign's plan. The image, published in the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the geography and history of this coastal region during a pivotal moment in world history. The sailing ships in the foreground add to the sense of activity and tension, as the waters of the Black Sea churn in the background. The cliffs and rugged coastline provide a dramatic backdrop to the scene, highlighting the challenges of transportation and trade in this era before modern maritime technology. This historical print offers a fascinating window into the past, providing insights into the military strategies, geopolitical tensions, and daily life of the 19th century.
