EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Asian Male, 1880," is a striking image from the collection of 71 items, which includes photographs and negatives on glass, created by the renowned revolutionary-populist and social and political activist N.A. Charushin and N. Nikolaevich Petrov. Charushin began serving a hard labor sentence in the Transbaikal Territory in 1878, and this collection offers a unique glimpse into the history of this region during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The collection is particularly noteworthy for its emphasis on the tea trade with China, which was a significant economic force in the region at that time. The photographs depict various technological processes of growing and preparing tea, sections of trade routes, and views of China, Mongolia, Buryatia, and various towns and villages of Transbaikal. Several of the photographs, including this one of an Asian male, were taken in Urga, the capital of Outer Mongolia at that time. Nikolai Nikolaevich Petrov, the photographer of this image, captures the Asian male with an air of quiet intensity. The man's piercing gaze and the intricate details of his traditional clothing offer a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the region. The photograph is a testament to the diverse ethnicities and nationalities that populated Transbaikal during this period, making it an invaluable historical resource. This photograph, along with the rest of the collection, provides a fascinating window into the history of Transbaikal during a time of significant economic and cultural exchange with China and other neighboring regions. It is a reminder of the complex and dynamic history of this region and the people who called it home.
