The Atmospheric Railway at Dawlish, 1847, (1945). Creator: Unknown

The Atmospheric Railway at Dawlish, 1847, (1945). Railway line running along the sea front in the town of Dawlish on the south coast of Devon. The atmospheric system was devised by British engineers Samuel Clegg Jnr and Joseph Samuda, and installed on the South Devon Railway by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. A series of engine houses, with steam-driven pumps, were situated roughly every three miles along the route. These provided the power for the atmospheric pressure which pushed the train, doing away with the need for a locomotive. The system was costly to maintain, however, and the line soon reverted to using steam locomotive powered trains. From " British Railways", by Arthur Elton. [Collins, London, 1945]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic Atmospheric Railway at Dawlish in 1847, showcasing a remarkable feat of engineering and innovation. The railway line gracefully runs along the picturesque seafront of this charming town on the south coast of Devon, England. Designed by British engineers Samuel Clegg Jr and Joseph Samuda, with installation overseen by the legendary Isambard Kingdom Brunel, this atmospheric system revolutionized transportation during its time. Engine houses equipped with steam-driven pumps were strategically placed every three miles along the route to generate atmospheric pressure that propelled trains without the need for locomotives. While initially groundbreaking, maintaining this intricate system proved costly over time. Consequently, steam locomotive-powered trains eventually replaced it. Nevertheless, this photograph serves as a testament to an era when ingenuity and ambition pushed boundaries in pursuit of progress. The image's vibrant colors bring to life not only the railway but also the surrounding coastal landscape. It showcases how technology can seamlessly blend into geographical features while providing efficient transportation solutions. As we admire this historical snapshot from Arthur Elton's "British Railways" we are transported back to a defining period in Britain's social history—a time when visionaries like Brunel left an indelible mark on our nation's development. This print is a reminder of their enduring legacy and their contributions to shaping modern transport systems worldwide.
