B. C. Day, January 1912, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting
B. C. Day - Some Members Of The Supporting Parties As They Appeared On Their Return From The Polar Journey, January 1912, (1913). Motor engineer Bernard Day. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "B. C. Day, January 1912" and captured by artist Herbert Ponting in 1913, offers a poignant glimpse into the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. The image showcases motor engineer Bernard Day alongside some members of the supporting parties as they return from their polar journey. The Terra Nova Expedition, also known as the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), was an ambitious endeavor that aimed to further scientific research while striving to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Led by Scott, this diverse team included experts in various fields such as geology, zoology, surgery, photography, engineering, skiing expertise, meteorology and physics. On January 17th, 1912 - after enduring treacherous conditions - Scott and his companions Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans finally reached their long-awaited destination only to discover that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them there by a month. Tragically delayed by blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey back home from the Pole's unforgiving embrace; Scott and his remaining team members succumbed to nature's harsh grip at the end of March. It wasn't until eight months later that their bodies were discovered along with their diaries which would forever immortalize their heroic efforts. This evocative photograph is part of "Scotts Last Expedition". Volume I published in London in 1913 by Smith Elder & Co. , offering us a visual testament to both human resilience and nature's indomitable power in one unforgettable moment frozen in time.
