Babylonian Lions just received at the Gardens of the Zoological Society, Regent's-Park, [London], 1856. Alderman Finnis has on various occasions given proof of his disposition to support the noble zoological collection in the Regent's-park by that kind of aid which can only be given by the shipowners...[he] has, we believe, for several years past been engaged in transporting the Assyrian marbles, which now enrich the British Museum, from Busrah; and on almost every voyage some new or interesting animal has been taken on board with them for the Zoological Society...The Lion of Assyria figures in an important position on the marbles, and the living specimens, now for the first time exhibited in Europe, will have a peculiar interest to the archaeologist, as well as to the naturalist...the male [is] apparently about two years old, and the female considerably younger'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Babylonian Lions Make Their Debut at the Gardens of the Zoological Society, Regent's-Park, London, 1856 This photograph captures the moment of arrival of the Babylonian Lions at the Gardens of the Zoological Society in Regent's-Park, London, in 1856. The lions, a significant addition to the esteemed collection, were generously donated by Alderman Finnis, a benefactor who had been instrumental in transporting the Assyrian marbles from Busrah for several years. The marbles, now housed in the British Museum, feature the iconic image of the Babylonian Lion, and the living specimens, displayed for the first time in Europe, held a unique appeal to both the archaeologist and the naturalist. The male lion, approximately two years old, and the female, considerably younger, are seen here in their new enclosure, eagerly awaiting the public's first glimpse. Alderman Finnis's support for the Zoological Society was evident through his role as a shipowner, transporting not only the Assyrian marbles but also various new and interesting animals on each voyage. The Babylonian Lions, with their distinctive mane and powerful build, were a testament to his generosity and commitment to the advancement of knowledge in the fields of both archaeology and natural history. This photograph, taken by Pearson, offers a glimpse into the excitement and importance of these rare and fascinating creatures making their European debut, and serves as a reminder of the close connection between the worlds of art, history, and the natural world.
