Balaclava - view inside the port, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Balaclava - view inside the port, 1854. Crimean War. View of the'...inside of the port, which is only accessible through a very narrow circuitous channel, in the form of the letter S. The entrance is not seen at a cannon-shot distance, even when in the bay. The port looks like a pool in a little valley, surrounded by high perpendicular cliffs. On the left of a Genoese fortress (three round towers) lies the town - consisting of one street alongside the shore: it is hidden by the shipping (some sixty large vessels) in the port - a two-decker amongst them. A few houses lie scattered above the hidden street: on the left is the hospital. On the side of the mountain some camp fires are burning. In the foreground is the road leading to Sebastopol, with carts and waggons drawn by mules or oxen and two camels abreast'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white print depicts the inner workings of Balaclava's port during the Crimean War in 1854. Nestled in a secluded valley and accessible only through a narrow, circuitous channel, the port appears as a tranquil pool surrounded by towering cliffs. The entrance to the port is hidden from view, even from close range. In the foreground, a bustling scene unfolds with ships, some sixty large vessels, anchored in the port. A two-decker British warship is among them, adding to the military presence. The town, consisting of a single street along the shore, is concealed by the shipping. A few houses, including a hospital, can be seen scattered above the hidden street. Campfires burn on the side of the mountain, indicating the presence of encampments. The road to Sebastopol winds its way through the scene, with carts and wagons drawn by mules, oxen, and even camels making their way along it. This engraving, published in the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the logistical efforts required to support the military campaign in Crimea. The print captures the rugged terrain, the bustling activity, and the strategic importance of the port during this disputed territory's tumultuous history.
