EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that showcases the intricate world of bees and their significance to human life. Created by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins, this artwork beautifully captures various aspects of beekeeping and the relationship between bees and humans. In the central image, we are presented with a mesmerizing scene of bee skeps surrounded by lush plants that serve as forage for these industrious insects. The attention to detail is remarkable, as Hawkins includes Indian, American, and South European bees in this composition. A section cut away from one skep reveals a piece of honeycomb standing on edge, while a new Queen cell hangs gracefully in front of it. The surrounding vignettes further highlight the multifaceted nature of beekeeping. We witness people enjoying bread and honey, capturing swarms of bees, purchasing honey from an apothecary for its medicinal properties, and even defending towns using strategically placed bee skeps. Wax chandlers selling candles and blocks of wax add another layer to this narrative. Hawkins' work not only celebrates the beauty and complexity of bees but also emphasizes their utility to mankind. This print serves as both an educational tool and a visual delight for those who appreciate nature's wonders.
