A Berg Drifting in McMurdo Sound, c1910–1913, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting

A Berg Drifting in McMurdo Sound, c1910– 1913, (1913). Iceberg with penguins in the foreground. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "A Berg Drifting in McMurdo Sound, c1910–1913" by Herbert Ponting takes us back to the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. The image showcases a majestic iceberg peacefully drifting in McMurdo Sound, with a group of penguins gracefully navigating the icy foreground. In 1910, Captain Scott embarked on the Terra Nova Expedition, also known as the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913). This ambitious mission aimed to continue scientific research and exploration in Antarctica while striving to be the first to reach the South Pole. Accompanied by a diverse team including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, and more experts from various fields, Scott's journey was filled with determination and curiosity about this uncharted territory. However, upon reaching their destination on January 17th, 1912 after enduring treacherous blizzards and dwindling supplies; they discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had already achieved this feat one month earlier. Tragically delayed by harsh weather conditions and facing dire circumstances without sufficient resources for survival; Scott and his remaining team members succumbed at the end of March. Their bodies were eventually found eight months later along with their poignant diaries which provided invaluable insights into their heroic efforts. This evocative photograph captures both the beauty and challenges encountered during this historic expedition. It serves as a powerful reminder of Captain Scott's unwavering spirit in pursuit of scientific knowledge amidst nature's unforgiving forces.
