Black Flag Camp. - Amundsens Black Flag Within A Few Miles of the South Pole, 1912, (1913)
Black Flag Camp. - Amundsens Black Flag Within A Few Miles of the South Pole, 16 January 1912, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. Photogravure after a sketch by Dr Edward A Wilson, from Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the desolate beauty of Black Flag Camp, a significant milestone in Captain Robert Falcon Scott's ill-fated Terra Nova Expedition. In 1912, amidst the unforgiving Antarctic landscape, Scott and his team found themselves within a few miles of their ultimate goal - the South Pole. Accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, Scott pushed forward with unwavering determination. Their expedition was not only driven by the desire to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole but also by a commitment to scientific exploration. However, upon reaching their destination on 17 January 1912, they were met with crushing disappointment. The Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had already triumphed over them by claiming this coveted prize just one month earlier. Tragically delayed by blizzards and plagued by dwindling supplies, Scott and his remaining team members succumbed to exhaustion and extreme conditions at the end of March. It would be eight long months before their bodies and diaries were discovered. This poignant photogravure is based on a sketch drawn by Dr Edward A Wilson during those final days of struggle. It serves as a haunting reminder of both human resilience in pursuit of knowledge and nature's unyielding power in even our greatest endeavors.
