A Blizzard Approaching Across The Sea Ice, c1910– 1913, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "A Blizzard Approaching Across The Sea Ice" captures the treacherous beauty of the Antarctic landscape during Captain Robert Falcon Scott's final expedition. Taken by renowned photographer Herbert Ponting in 1913, this image transports us back to a time of great exploration and adventure. The Terra Nova Expedition, led by Scott, embarked on a mission to reach the South Pole in June 1910. Comprised of a diverse team including scientists, engineers, and experts in various fields, they aimed not only to conquer new frontiers but also to conduct important scientific research. As we gaze upon this photograph, we can almost feel the biting cold and hear the howling winds that heralded an approaching blizzard. The vast expanse of sea ice stretches out before us as an ominous reminder of nature's power and unpredictability. Scott's team faced numerous challenges along their journey: harsh weather conditions, dwindling supplies, and ultimately being beaten to their goal by Roald Amundsen's Norwegian expedition. Tragically, Scott and his companions perished on their return journey due to exhaustion and extreme weather conditions. This poignant image serves as a testament to the indomitable spirit of exploration while reminding us of the sacrifices made in pursuit of knowledge. It stands as a tribute not only to those brave men who lost their lives but also to all explorers who have pushed boundaries throughout history.
