EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intense moment of the Bombardment of St Jean D Acre by Admiral Sir Charles Napier on 3 November 1840. The image showcases a dramatic scene from the Syrian War, where British, Turkish, and Austrian ships relentlessly bombarded Egyptian positions in the port of Acre. The war erupted after Maronite Christians rebelled against Egyptian forces that had invaded Syria a year prior. As shells rained down upon the city, one struck an ammunition magazine in the south, resulting in a devastating explosion that claimed the lives of 1100 individuals. The print provides a glimpse into naval warfare during this period with various types of vessels depicted - sailing ships, steamships, and warships - all engaged in fierce combat at sea. The composition highlights both the destructive power unleashed upon Acre's ancient city walls and its coastal geography. Created by H Winkles as part of Lieutenant Colonel William Freke Williams' book "England's Battles by Sea and Land" published in 1857, this historical artifact offers us insight into a significant event that shaped regional politics and conflicts during the nineteenth century. With its monochrome aesthetic capturing every detail amidst billowing smoke and exploding shells, this print serves as a reminder of both human ingenuity in warfare technology and its devastating consequences for those caught within its reach.
