EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Vasily Surikov's masterpiece, "Boyarynya Morozova" painted in 1887. The artwork immortalizes Feodosia Morozova, a prominent figure of the Old Believer movement during the 17th century. In protest against religious reforms initiated by Patriarch Nikon, she bravely stood her ground and became an icon of defiance. Feodosia's fate took a tragic turn when she was arrested alongside her sister, Princess Evdokia Urusova. Confined to the cellar of St Paphnutius Monastery in Borovsk, they endured unimaginable hardships. Tragically, Feodosia perished from starvation within those walls in 1675. Her unwavering commitment to her beliefs led the Old Believers to venerate her as a martyr. Surikov's painting captures the spirit and resilience of this noblewoman amidst a wintry landscape. With bold strokes and vibrant colors, he portrays Feodosia gesturing defiantly towards an unseen crowd that watches on with curiosity and awe. Displayed at the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, this artwork serves as a powerful reminder of Russia's religious conflicts during that era. It symbolizes not only one woman's struggle but also represents the larger historical context surrounding religion and its impact on society. Through this image print, we are transported back to a time where faith clashed with authority and individuals like Feodosia Morozova fearlessly fought for their beliefs despite overwhelming odds.
