EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from the First World War, taken in 1914-1918 and published in 1933, we witness a unique blend of British and Dutch cultures. The image showcases a group of British sailors who found themselves stranded in Holland after being cut off during their mission to defend Antwerp. Forced to seek refuge across the border, these brave men adopted Dutch footwear - clogs - as they embraced the neutral state's national dress. The photograph captures not only their resilience but also their sense of humor amidst adversity. Dressed in full naval uniform with bell-bottom trousers, these sailors proudly display their new-found Dutch identity through their choice of shoes. Their faces reflect a mixture of determination and camaraderie as they navigate an unfamiliar situation. This historical snapshot serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by those involved in naval warfare during World War I. It highlights the resourcefulness and adaptability required for survival on foreign soil while showcasing the diversity within military ranks. Preserved by Odhams Press Ltd. , this image was featured in "The Pageant of the Century" publication from 1933.
