C. H. Meares, January 1912, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting

C. H. Meares - Some Members Of The Supporting Parties As They Appeared On Their Return From The Polar Journey, January 1912, (1913). Chief dog-handler Cecil Meares (1877-1937). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, taken by renowned photographer Herbert Ponting in January 1912, showcases Chief dog-handler Cecil Meares and other members of the supporting parties as they returned from their polar journey. The image is part of the collection titled "C. H. Meares - Some Members Of The Supporting Parties As They Appeared On Their Return From The Polar Journey" and was captured during the final expedition led by British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. The Terra Nova Expedition, also known as the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), aimed to continue scientific research initiated by Scott during his previous voyage to Antarctica. With a diverse team consisting of geologists, zoologists, surgeons, engineers, photographers, ski experts, meteorologists, and physicists among others; Scott's ultimate goal was to be the first person to reach the geographic South Pole. However, upon reaching their destination on 17th January 1912 after enduring treacherous blizzards and dwindling supplies; Scott and his companions discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had already beaten them there a month earlier. Tragically delayed by harsh weather conditions and running out of provisions on their return journey; Scott and his remaining team members perished at the end of March. Their bodies were not discovered until eight months later along with their poignant diaries which documented their heroic struggle for survival. This powerful photograph serves as a haunting reminder of the bravery exhibited by these explorers in pursuit of scientific knowledge and human achievement amidst unforgiving polar landscapes.
