Campbell and Priestley Afloat on Pancake Ice, 1912, (1913). Artist: G Murray Levick
Campbell and Priestley Afloat on Pancake Ice, 1912, (1913). Expedition members Lieutenant Victor Campbell and geologist Raymond Priestley. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Campbell and Priestley Afloat on Pancake Ice, 1912" captures a poignant moment from the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Taken by artist G Murray Levick in 1913, the image showcases expedition members Lieutenant Victor Campbell and geologist Raymond Priestley navigating through treacherous pancake ice. This photograph is a testament to the incredible bravery and determination exhibited by these explorers as they ventured into uncharted territories. The Terra Nova Expedition, also known as the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), aimed to continue scientific research while striving to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. However, upon their arrival at the Pole on 17 January 1912, Scott and his team were met with disappointment. They discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them there by a month. Despite this setback, Scott's team persevered until they tragically succumbed to harsh conditions and dwindling supplies in late March. The discovery of their bodies and diaries eight months later added an element of solemnity to this historic expedition. This particular photo serves as a reminder of their courage amidst adversity. Preserved within "Scott's Last Expedition". Volume II published in London in 1913, this image stands as a testament not only to the indomitable spirit of exploration but also as a tribute to those who sacrificed everything for scientific advancement in one of Earth's most unforgiving environments.
