Captain Dreyfus before the court martial, 1894. Artist: Henri Meyer
Captain Dreyfus before the court martial, 1894. A French army officer of Jewish extraction, Albert Dreyfus was wrongly accused of handing secret documents to a German agent. He was court-martialled and disgraced, and sentenced to life imprisonment on Devils Island as a traitor. Although the legal proceedings were irregular, the verdict was widely approved of in French society and the press, where anti-Semitism was rife. The case, which became known as l Affaire Dreyfus continued to divide France, with the author Emile Zola writing a famous open letter accusing the army of a cover-up. Eventually, in 1906, Dreyfus received a full pardon from the President of France, and he went on to serve with distinction in the French army in the First World War. From Le Petit Journal. (Paris, December 1894)

EDITORS COMMENTS
Captain Dreyfus before the court martial, 1894. A powerful depiction of a pivotal moment in history captured by artist Henri Meyer. In this haunting photo print, we witness the unjust trial of Captain Albert Dreyfus, a French army officer of Jewish descent who was falsely accused of espionage during a time when anti-Semitism ran rampant. The image portrays the solemn figure of Captain Dreyfus standing before the court, his military uniform representing both his loyalty and his vulnerability. The courtroom itself becomes a symbol of prejudice and religious bias as it is filled with those who have already condemned him. This photograph serves as a stark reminder of the deep divisions within French society at that time. While many celebrated Dreyfus' conviction, others recognized it as an egregious miscarriage of justice. One such voice was Emile Zola, whose open letter exposed the army's cover-up and ignited public outrage. Despite enduring years on Devil's Island, Dreyfus never lost hope or faith in truth prevailing. His unwavering determination led to his eventual exoneration in 1906 and reinstatement into the French army during World War I where he served with distinction. Henri Meyer's artistry captures not only an individual's struggle for justice but also highlights broader themes such as prejudice and political manipulation that continue to resonate today.
