Captain Scott in His Den, c1911, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting

Captain Scott in His Den, c1911, (1913). British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) writing in his quarters. Scotts final expedition left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intimate moment of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott in his den during his final expedition. Taken by renowned photographer Herbert Ponting, the image showcases Scott diligently writing in his quarters, surrounded by books and scientific instruments. The photograph is a poignant reminder of Scott's ambitious journey to the South Pole as part of the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913). Comprising a diverse team of experts including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, and engineers, this mission aimed to continue important scientific research while also achieving the historic feat of reaching the geographic South Pole. However, upon their arrival on January 17th, 1912, Scott and his companions discovered that they had been beaten to their objective by Roald Amundsen's Norwegian expedition. Trapped by blizzards and dwindling supplies, they faced insurmountable challenges that ultimately led to their tragic demise at the end of March. Eight months later, their bodies were found along with their diaries - testament to their unwavering determination and sacrifice in pursuit of discovery. This particular image from "Scott's Last Expedition". Volume I offers a glimpse into Captain Scott's personal space where he meticulously recorded his experiences amidst harsh conditions.
