The Castle Berg at the End of the Winter, c1911, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting
The Castle Berg at the End of the Winter, (Showing the position of the cavern in illustration facing p.104), c1911, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "The Castle Berg at the End of Winter" takes us back to the early 20th century, capturing a moment from the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. The image, captured by photographer Herbert Ponting in 1911 and published in 1913, showcases the stunning beauty and harsh conditions of Antarctica. Scott's Terra Nova Expedition aimed to continue scientific research while also striving to be the first to reach the South Pole. Unfortunately, upon their arrival on January 17,1912, they discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them there by a month. Disheartened but determined, Scott and his team faced blizzards and dwindling supplies as they made their way back. Tragically, Scott and his companions - Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans - succumbed to exhaustion and extreme weather conditions at the end of March. Their bodies were found eight months later along with their poignant diaries. "The Castle Berg at the End of Winter" not only captures a frozen landscape but serves as a reminder of human resilience in pursuit of exploration. It stands as a testament to those who risked everything for scientific discovery during this era of polar exploration. This photograph is part of "Scott's Last Expedition". Volume I published by Smith Elder & Co. , offering an invaluable glimpse into one of history's most daring expeditions
