Cave in the Barrier, Cape Crozier, Jan. 4th, 1911, (1913). Artist: Edward Wilson

Cave in the Barrier, Cape Crozier, Jan. 4th, 1911, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Cave in the Barrier, Cape Crozier, Jan. 4th, 1911" takes us back to a significant moment in history during the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Led by Scott himself, the Terra Nova Expedition aimed to explore and conduct scientific research in Antarctica while also aiming to be the first to reach the South Pole. In this particular image captured by artist Edward Wilson, we witness a group of brave explorers standing at Cape Crozier on January 4th, 1911. The harsh and unforgiving landscape surrounds them as they embark on their treacherous journey towards their ultimate goal. Accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, Scott's team eventually reached the South Pole on January 17th, 1912. However, their joy quickly turned into disappointment as they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them there by a month. Tragically delayed by blizzards and facing dwindling supplies on their return journey from the pole, Scott and his remaining team members perished at the end of March. It would take eight long months before their bodies were found along with their diaries. This poignant photograph serves as a reminder of both human determination and nature's formidable power. It immortalizes an important chapter in exploration history while honoring those who risked everything for discovery and knowledge amidst one of Earth's most inhospitable environments.
