EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, a handsomely-carved chair takes center stage, a testament to the rich history and craftsmanship of the 19th century. The chair, presented to Thomas Farncomb, Esq. during his tenure as Lord Mayor of London on May 23, 1850, was a gift from the Corporation of Rye in Sussex. The chair, carved from solid oak, is a masterpiece of heraldic design, bearing the arms of both the City of London and the Borough of Rye. Underneath the intricately detailed coats of arms, old English letters boldly proclaim the origin and provenance of the chair: "Presented by the Corporation of Rye to Thomas Farncomb, Esq. Lord Mayor of London May 23, 1850." This chair, a fine example of Victorian-era handicraft, was likely crafted by a skilled artisan from Rye, showcasing the region's rich tradition of woodworking and heraldic design. The chair's ornate carvings and engravings speak to the importance of the occasion and the respect and admiration the people of Rye held for their distinguished guest. This photograph, originally published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when such intricately crafted gifts were commonplace and the art of heraldry continued to thrive. The chair remains a reminder of the enduring connection between the people of Rye and the Lord Mayor of London, a bond that was strengthened through this beautiful and thoughtful gift.
