Charles Darwin, English naturalist, 1875. Artist: Edward Linley Sambourne

Charles Darwin, English naturalist, 1875. Darwin (1809-1882) was employed as naturalist on HMS Beagle from 1831-1836. He first made his name as a geologist, but is remembered for his momentous contributions to biology - primarily his demonstration that evolution has occurred and his discovery of the principle of natural selection of heritable variation as the cause of evolution. His famous book Origin of Species was published in 1859. In this cartoon from Punch, Darwin is portrayed with his head superimposed on the body of a monkey, referring to the controversy raging at the time over Darwins theory that man is descended from apes. It also refers to his The Movement and Habits of Climbing Plants, published in 1875, which was an expansion of a paper which appeared in the Journal of the Linnean Society in 1865

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Charles Darwin, the renowned English naturalist, in 1875. The artist behind this masterpiece is Edward Linley Sambourne. Darwin, born in 1809 and passing away in 1882, made significant contributions to biology throughout his lifetime. Initially recognized as a geologist, he gained fame for his groundbreaking work on evolution and the principle of natural selection. In this intriguing cartoon from Punch magazine, Darwin's head is cleverly superimposed on the body of a monkey. This alludes to the heated controversy surrounding his theory that humans descended from apes. Additionally, it references his publication "The Movement and Habits of Climbing Plants" in 1875—an expansion of an earlier paper published by the Journal of the Linnean Society. The image showcases Darwin with a distinguished beard and pipe—a symbol of wisdom and intellectual pursuits during Victorian times. It portrays him as a pioneer scientist dedicated to unraveling nature's mysteries through observation and research. Through this portrait engraving captured by Edward Linley Sambourne, we are reminded not only of Charles Darwin's immense impact on science but also of the controversies he faced during his time. His legacy continues to shape our understanding of biology and evolution even today—making him one of history's most influential figures in scientific exploration.
