Charles X, King of France, 19th century. Artist: Perrot
Charles X, King of France, 19th century. The brother of Louis XVI and Louis XVIII, Charles (1757-1836) came to the throne in succession to the latter in 1824. His coronation, at the traditional site of Reims, was a grandiose affair comparable in scale (and cost) to that of George IV of England in 1821. In style his rule harked back to the pre-revolutionary Ancien Regime, making him unpopular with the liberal elements of French society. In 1830 he elected to abdicate rather than rule as a constitutional monarch

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Charles X, the King of France during the 19th century. Painted by Perrot, this portrait captures the essence of a monarch who reigned with a style reminiscent of the pre-revolutionary Ancien Regime. Charles X (1757-1836) ascended to the throne in 1824 after his brother Louis XVIII. His coronation at Reims was an extravagant event comparable to that of George IV of England in 1821, emphasizing his grandiose approach to ruling. However, this traditionalist reign did not sit well with liberal factions within French society. In 1830, faced with growing opposition and unrest among his subjects, Charles X made a controversial decision: he chose to abdicate rather than rule as a constitutional monarch. This act marked a pivotal moment in French history and highlighted the shifting dynamics between monarchy and democracy. The detailed engraving portrays Charles X wearing military uniform, symbolizing both his role as ruler and commander-in-chief during times of war. The artist skillfully captures his regal presence while also hinting at the challenges he faced during his reign. This historical print offers viewers a glimpse into an era defined by political upheaval and societal change. It serves as a reminder that even powerful figures like Charles X are subject to public sentiment and must navigate complex landscapes when it comes to governance.
