Cherry-Garrard Giving His Pony Michael A Roll in the Snow, c1911, (1913)

Cherry-Garrard Giving His Pony Michael A Roll in the Snow, 1913. Zoologist Apsley Cherry-Garrard (1886-1959). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print titled "Cherry-Garrard Giving His Pony Michael A Roll in the Snow" captures a poignant moment during the Terra Nova Expedition of 1910-1913. Zoologist Apsley Cherry-Garrard, a member of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott's team, is seen playfully engaging with his pony, Michael, amidst the vast snowy landscape. This image symbolizes the camaraderie and resilience exhibited by these brave explorers as they embarked on their scientific mission to Antarctica. The expedition comprised an eclectic group of professionals including geologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, and meteorologists. Led by Scott's unwavering determination to reach the South Pole and continue their groundbreaking research from previous expeditions. However, upon reaching their destination on January 17th, 1912, they were met with crushing disappointment as they discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them to this historic milestone just a month earlier. Despite this setback and facing harsh blizzards along with dwindling supplies on their return journey, Scott and his remaining team members tragically perished at the end of March. The discovery of their bodies and diaries eight months later added another layer of poignancy to this already tragic tale. This particular photograph serves as a testament to both the indomitable spirit displayed by these explorers in pursuit of knowledge and adventure but also highlights the immense challenges faced in one of Earth's most unforgiving environments. From its historical significance to its artistic composition capturing a tender moment amidst adversity; this print encapsulates an important chapter in exploration history - forever reminding us of those who dared greatly for science and discovery.
