City of Milwaukee, 1874. Creator: Robert Hinshelwood

City of Milwaukee, 1874. View of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. The name " Milwaukee" carries in its sound the evidence of its Indian origin. It is a modified spelling of " Milwacky", the designation given by the Indians to a small village near the site of the present city, and is said to signify " rich or beautiful land". Like so many of the Western cities that we carelessly call new and young, Milwaukee has a history reaching far beyond the time of written records. Not only are there relics here of very ancient Indian habitations, but the mounds found and opened near the town show unmistakable proofs of the residence of an even earlier race, whose very traditions are now extinct. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1874]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the City of Milwaukee in 1874, showcasing a mesmerizing view of this historic city located in Wisconsin, USA. The photograph was taken by Robert Hinshelwood, an esteemed artist known for his remarkable depictions of landscapes and urban scenes. The name "Milwaukee" itself carries with it the echoes of its Native American origins. Derived from the Indian term "Milwacky" which referred to a small village near the present-day city, it is believed to signify "rich or beautiful land". This rich history extends far beyond written records, as evidenced by ancient Indian habitations and mounds discovered near Milwaukee that provide glimpses into extinct traditions and cultures predating even those recorded. In this image captured over a century ago, we are transported back in time to witness the early days of Milwaukee's development. Like many other Western cities often dismissed as new or young, Milwaukee boasts a heritage deeply rooted in the past. Robert Hinshelwood's skillful lens allows us to appreciate not only the architectural beauty but also the natural splendor surrounding this bustling metropolis. As we gaze upon this extraordinary scene preserved through time, we can't help but marvel at how much has changed while simultaneously recognizing that some elements endure throughout history. This print serves as a testament to both our shared human legacy and our enduring fascination with capturing moments frozen forever on film.
