William Waud Collection

William Waud was a 19th century British artist and illustrator. He is best known for his work on the American Civil War, which he documented through sketches and drawings. He was born in London in 1832 and studied at the Royal Academy of Arts. Waud's work was published in Harper's Weekly, one of the most popular magazines of its time, as well as other publications. His sketches were highly detailed and accurate depictions of battles, landscapes, people, and events during the war. His art captured both sides of the conflict with equal attention to detail. After the war ended he moved to Canada where he continued to paint until his death in 1878. William Waud's art remains an important part of our understanding of this period in history today.
