Southwest Pass, 1872. Creator: Henry Duff Linton
Southwest Pass, 1872. Sailing boat passing a navigation aid on the Mississippi River Delta on the south coast of the USA. The mouth of the river...was found to consist of numerous arms, or passes, through low swamps and islands formed by the sediment brought down by the river. This net-work of creeks, bayous, and passes, is known as the Delta of the Mississippi. It covers an area estimated at fourteen thousand square miles, and is slowly advancing into the Gulf by the shoaling caused by the deposition of fresh sediment brought down by the river. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. I, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1872]

Southwest Pass, 1872 - Navigating the Delta of the Mighty Mississippi
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a sailing boat gracefully passing a navigation aid on Southwest Pass, located in the mesmerizing Mississippi River Delta. The mouth of this legendary river reveals an intricate network of creeks, bayous, and passes that form what is known as the Delta of the Mississippi. With its low swamps and islands formed by sediment carried downstream by the river's powerful flow, this expansive delta covers an estimated area of fourteen thousand square miles. Henry Duff Linton skillfully captured this moment in time during his exploration for "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In". His detailed engraving showcases not only the beauty but also highlights how this dynamic region is slowly advancing into the Gulf due to shoaling caused by fresh sediment deposition. As we gaze upon this historic image from 1872, we are transported back to a time when sailboats were essential for navigating these treacherous waters. The presence of dolphins frolicking alongside adds an enchanting touch to this already stunning scene. Linton's work reminds us of both nature's grandeur and man's resilience in adapting to challenging environments. This remarkable print serves as a testament to our enduring fascination with exploring and understanding our vast natural world.
