EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 17th century print showcases the Coat of Arms of Louis XIV, King of France, from the year 1668. The intricately designed escutcheon, created anonymously, is a testament to the rich artistic and cultural heritage of the time. The central image features the monarch's personal emblem, "Le Roi Soleil" or "The Sun King," represented by a radiant sun with rays extending outwards. Above the sun, a fleur-de-lis, a symbol of the French monarchy, is present. The background is adorned with various elements of heraldry, including a crown, a crucifix, and two fleurs-de-lis. The uppermost part of the crest displays the royal title "Rex Francorum et Navarrae," meaning "King of France and Navarre." The lower part is reserved for the quartered arms of the Bourbon and Lorraine families, significant in Louis XIV's lineage. The design is further embellished with intricate floral patterns and lettering, adding to its visual appeal. Originating from the Netherlands, this print is now part of the Rijksmuseum's extensive collection in Amsterdam. It is a reminder of the deep historical connections between the Dutch and French monarchies during the 17th century. The artistry and attention to detail evident in this anonymous work demonstrate the importance of heraldry as a means of expressing royal power and identity during this period.
