EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite watercolor depicts the coat of arms of the de Witte family, inspired by a diamond-shaped mourning board bearing the initials "I W" and the year "1590." The image dates from the 1750s to the 1790s and is part of the Heraldic Objects collection at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The coat of arms displays a blue shield adorned with a silver, or argent, lion rampant, holding a golden, or or, key in its paw. The crest above the shield features a helm with a mantling in the colors of the shield, and a wreath of the same colors encircling the crest. The diamond shape of the mourning board, a common form of memorial in the Low Countries during the 16th and 18th centuries, adds a somber yet elegant touch to the design. The initials "I W" on both sides of the shield likely represent the names of the individuals for whom the mourning board and, subsequently, the coat of arms were created. The year "1590" suggests a connection to an earlier generation of the de Witte family. This beautiful watercolor, created in the 18th century, is an anonymous work, with no known artist attributed to it. It is a testament to the rich heraldic tradition in the Netherlands and Europe during this period and serves as a reminder of the importance of family heritage and history.
