Court martial of Albert Dreyfus, 1894
Court martial of Albert Dreyfus, 1894. Dreyfus (c1859-1935) in front of the War Council. A French army officer of Jewish extraction, Dreyfus was wrongly accused of handing secret documents to a German agent. He was court-martialled and disgraced, and sentenced to life imprisonment on Devils Island as a traitor. Although the legal proceedings were irregular, the verdict was widely approved of in French society and the press, where anti-Semitism was rife. The case, which became known as l Affaire Dreyfus continued to divide France, with the author Emile Zola writing a famous open letter accusing the army of a cover-up. Eventually, in 1906, Dreyfus received a full pardon from the President of France, and he went on to serve with distinction in the French army in the First World War. From Le Petit Journal. (Paris, December 1894)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in history - the court martial of Albert Dreyfus in 1894. Standing before the War Council, Dreyfus, a French army officer of Jewish descent, faced false accusations of espionage and betrayal. The image reveals the weight of injustice on his shoulders as he confronts a society plagued by anti-Semitism. Despite irregular legal proceedings, the verdict was met with widespread approval from French society and media outlets tainted by prejudice. However, this case, known as l'Affaire Dreyfus, became an enduring symbol of division within France. Renowned author Emile Zola penned a powerful open letter accusing the army of orchestrating a cover-up. Dreyfus's life took an unexpected turn when he received a full pardon from the President of France in 1906. Remarkably resilient, he went on to serve with distinction in the French army during World War I. The photograph not only serves as evidence of religious prejudice but also highlights the courage and resilience displayed by Dreyfus throughout his ordeal. It stands as a reminder that justice can be elusive and that individuals must fight against discrimination and wrongful persecution. Preserved through time by Le Petit Journal in Paris during December 1894, this remarkable print allows us to bear witness to one man's battle for truth amidst societal divisions fueled by bigotry.
