Cover of Roald Amundsen, Explorer by Charles Turley, 1935. Norwegian explorer. Amundsen (1872-1928) led the first expedition to reach the South Pole, arriving at the Pole in December 1911, one month before the ill-fated British expedition commanded by Captain Scott. In 1918 he became the first to navigate the Northwest Passage, discovering in the process that the route could never be navigable for large vessels. EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print showcases the cover of "Roald Amundsen, Explorer" by Charles Turley, a remarkable piece from 1935. The Norwegian explorer himself, Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen (1872-1928), takes center stage in this portrait. Known for his groundbreaking achievements in polar exploration, Amundsen led the first successful expedition to reach the South Pole in December 1911, beating Captain Scott's ill-fated British team by just one month. Amundsen's legacy extends beyond conquering Antarctica; he also became the first person to navigate the treacherous Northwest Passage in 1918. This daring feat revealed that large vessels could never traverse this route successfully. Unfortunately, tragedy struck when Amundsen lost his life during an Arctic search mission for Italian aeronaut Umberto Nobile in 1928. In this lithograph artwork by Charles Turley, we see Amundsen holding a banner with flags representing his country and ship proudly displayed behind him. Dressed warmly in a parka against the cold weather backdrop of ice and snow, he exudes determination and resilience. This historical photograph offers us a glimpse into an era of great exploration and adventure. It serves as a tribute to Roald Amundsen's indomitable spirit and unwavering pursuit of discovery amidst some of Earth's harshest environments.
